A customer wanted to plant either Cypress or Arborvitae outside of her back yard fence for screening.  We knew that Cypress, which can do well in certain pockets near the coast wouldn't work in her closer to the Merritt Parkway location.  And, unless she was vigilant in spraying the Arbs every couple months, they would just become snacks for the gangs of deer which brazenly accost our beautiful plantings.  Hemlock was perfect screening hedge for her.  Once or twice a year spraying (in the $80ish range) and annual pruning would keep them looking beautiful... I know this because I have over 150' of hemlock on my property!
